Jury comment
"PUB+ WASTE NO MORE is a well-considered conceptual project that seeks to address waste through a circular economic approach whilst focusing on a Melbourne icon - Young & Jacksons.
The jury commends the project for conceptualising the local recycling strategy of the Degraves recycling program at a larger scale and attempting to provide rationale into how sustainable practices can be implemented across the City of Melbourne.
This project's ability to identify the behavioural aspect of the built environment through waste consumption is honourable and seeks to provide a scalable response to waste consumption and management whilst the project addresses consumerism lifestyle, it demonstrates the hierarchy of waste practices and highlights the effectiveness and benefits of waste use practices and applications.
The jury notes that whilst the architectural solution requires resolution. The programmatic idea and incorporation of the existing program were addressed well through the intention to activate the public realm. The jury appreciates that the work undertaken by the sole contributor is noted and appreciated. This project attempt to tackle a complex brief and relevant topical issue currently facing the industry is praiseworthy."
About
Pub+ explored the social and cultural history of the Australian pub. The studio aims to be much more ambitious by exploring new, exciting, dynamic and complex programs that go toward alleviating social ills by creating social cohesion. The studio seeks bold and experimental ideas that help the pub once again change and adapt.
Thesis Statement
How can we solve the waste crisis from the bottom to up if the big system fails us?
We live a lifestyle that generates tonnes of waste daily without realising its contribution to climate change. The delay in government and the system’s failure pushes us to rethink how to solve the waste crisis.
Pub+ is a zero-waste activism at the prominent corner of Melbourne, the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Street, emphasising the city’s care for the environment. The iconic Young and Jacksons Hotel would become a central threshold demonstrating what individuals and local communities can do to shift public attitude and behaviour on waste and consumption.
The thesis expands and turns around Young & Jackson to the new Town Hall Station precinct with a new civic transit park that practices circular economy and waste management from bottom to up.

Overall View
The proposed design retained Young and Jacksons’ iconic frontage and expanded with a new anchor 2 storeys on the side with two new recycling towers sitting above the metro exit and transit park. The "Waste No More" slogan is displayed on the tower to continue the billboard culture of Young and Jacksons and keep the project message bold and clear.
